One Way to Whitefish (2024).
An immigrant coming-of-age story, set in a time and place that are rarely celebrated in fiction -- a pocket of midcentury Manhattan that is long gone -- as well as a journey to the more mythic America of the West. A young man, Don, and his mother, Velma, manage a bar in Yorkville. The narrative moves between two time periods, Don’s childhood starting in 1941, and follows him through 1957, when he travels across the country to Whitefish, Montana.
